Things are played a bit looser in the anime, but the most out-there example had to be when Ash meets Lugia again along with its child, Silver. Silver is later captured by Team Rocket and used to lure out its parent.

In the anime. Ash and his friends first saw Lugia as a silhouette in Around the Whirlpool. After another mishap involving Team Rocket, Ash's group fell overboard and were slowly being sucked into a whirlpool. The whirlpool suddenly disappeared, after which Lugia passed by, all the while calling out.
