Why did the GBA have no backlight? Basically, the technology wasn't there, or at least not cheap enough and robust enough for a handheld, at the time.

The GBA is actually a lot more powerful than a regular SNES, besides the PPU. GBA has a much faster CPU (32-bit) and RAM putting it closer to a PlayStation. Thats pretty much how it was able to handle so many SNES ports so flawlessly.
