Is 6 cores enough for virtual machines?

Microsoft recommends using one core per virtual machine. Depending on the application running, we have experienced the need to run up to two cores per virtual machine (e.g. in the case of remote desktop services for a SQL-based ERP system).

How many virtual machines can i run on 16gb ram?
16 GB RAM is not a big amount. A maximum of 4 VMs should be possible, but in such a case each system did not have an own processor, if there is a heavy load on the VMs this did not work very well.

Depends on the games you play. For example Cyberpunk 2077 wouldn't work well with a CPU like that, 6 cores and 12 threads is the minimum (but 8 cores is best), and I expect more games like that to be coming out soon. Note that's just for running the game.

It depends on whether you youn the guest VM with bare minimum specs. As of 2022, it is not really worth running a Windows OS unless you give it 8GB of memory, while a Linux OS can work well with 4GB, or 2GB if console only with a light workload.

Are 6 cores enough for gaming?
Generally speaking, six cores is usually considered optimal for gaming in 2021. Four cores can still cut it but would hardly be a future-proof solution. Eight or more cores might provide performance improvement, but all this depends mainly on how a particular game is coded and what GPU the CPU would be paired with it.
