Do i need to play dark souls before dark souls 2?

It is not necessary story wise. However there are a lot of fun references in dark souls 2 that you'll miss out on. Additionally Dark Souls 1 is cheaper so might as well give it a shot first to make sure you enjoy it instead of dropping 60 dollars on the second one.
