It wasn't really, folk who hate EA and/or upset that it has females in its multiplayer call it a flop, or a failure. Some even claim it “killed EA”. EA said it”failed to meet targets” and physical sales were down 50% sounds bad, doesn't it? however, it sold 7 million copies and its target was 8 million.

Can a 8 year old play battlefield 5?
Sometimes when you get knocked down your character swears. In the second single player mission there is some frequent swearing so if you don't want your kids to hear that then keep them away from that mission. No dismemberment is present in the game. I would recommend this game to any child over 13 but no younger.
