I agree, knight is good for a beginner. Knight for high health, Cleric for healing spell, Sorcerer for offensive spell, Bandit for high dex and bow. Those would be my top suggestions. Also take Healing Wares as your starting gift.

Is magic build good dark souls 2?
it honestly makes very little difference regardless of the staff or spell used. while there is obviously a difference in damage output, its NOTHING like what the staff stats say. if a staff has slightly less "damage" from magic/dark than another staff, its going to do about the same damage on every spell.
