Should you become a vassal in medieval 2?

Its almost never worth accepting an offer to become a vassal. Its also never really worth attempting to make another nation your vassal since you will need to offer up a lot for them to accept and nothing really stops them from declaring war on you again a few turns later.

How many turns is a long campaign in medieval 2?
The main campaign lasts 225 turns, and my objective is to conquer 45 regions. This works out as taking a region every 5 turns on average. There's little time for slowing up and building your forces or economy. What makes things even worse is the very small movement range of armies.
