Why is doom considered more influential than wolfenstein?

Doom is credited with being the first multiplayer fps. Wolfenstein was earlier (and it shows) but was only single player whereas Doom gave us the chance to brutally murder up to 7 (iirc) of our friends/family/co-workers.
