How do ultimate team contracts work?

Every time a player is in the starting 11 or gets subbed on during the match, 1 contract match is consumed. The manager also consumes 1 contract match if he is managing the team. Therefore a player with 0 contract cards can't be in the starting 11 or on the bench. Managers without contract can't coach the team.
