How do you lose in arkham horror?
Pretty much the only way to lose is to get too many gates out at once. the doom track seems pretty irrelevant, since closing but not sealing a gate is a bad move except when its a 2 card gate (historical society, science building, hibbs roadhouse, silver twilight), or when you are desperate.
