Is sharpness 5 sword better than axe?

Swords deal attack damage but almost nothing else. However, axes effectively break wood and can deal significant attack damage. Using it as a weapon does diminish its durability a lot faster, but it is at least viable, whereas using a shovel to mine stone is not.
