Do you need a ditto to breed?

One of the quickest ways to breed is to have a Ditto as one of your breeding Pokémon. Ditto always mimic the other parent Pokémon, which means you're guaranteed to get (for example) a Girafarig Egg if you breed a Girafarig with a Ditto.

A Ditto will appear in the wild for everyone, and isn't just a common Pokémon that can transform at random - so if you catch one, other players nearby can get the same one too. It can also appear as a result of a Lure or Incense.

Can ditto breed legendaries?
No. Because all Legendary Pokemon are in the Undiscovered Egg Group, no Pokemon can breed with them. The only exception (sort of), is Manaphy. If you breed a Manaphy with a Ditto, you will get Phione.

What happens if a ditto fights a ditto?
If a Ditto encounters another Ditto, the resulting fight is a little different. I haven't seen this happen myself, but this video posted by WhatUpMC (around the 3:34 mark) shows that the two Dittos will just wiggle around until the secondary move, Struggle, is used. Eventually, one of the Dittos will win the fight.
