Play Fallout 3 first. Chronilogically speaking, it's set five years before New Vegas. If you're more of the imaginitive type like myself, you can come up with a pretty cool backstory for your characters as well. Concidering that in Fallout 3 you start as a child and in Fallout New Vegas you start as a young adult.
