Can i download dlc with physical game?

If we buy a physical copy of the game and then download the DLC from PlayStation store, will the DLC work for both copies or only one? The DLC will work, but you will need the physical disc in your console. Just because you bought the DLC, doesn't mean that you get the digital version of the original game for free.
